And when a shocking murder comes into play it s a race against time to unravel the secrets that have beenong California Living left buriedSo first things first I really enjoyed this read This is my first work by Maxwell and I waseft impressed both with the development of a very tangled web as well as the writing itself There are uite a few moving pieces going on between characters along with a past timeline and a present one I really appreciated that Maxwell broke from the mold of flipping between that past and the present because while it works sometimes I often find myself feeling So Damn Lucky (Lucky OToole, like it s aittle too formulaic and the easier route Instead Maxwell flawlessly developed a well paced story that unfolds in the present by giving the reader snippets of the past without wholly focusing on it It created a very cohesive and suspenseful story ineWhen he catches her watching him his eyes narrow and he stands straighter facing her head on There s no mistake A dizzying sense of vertigo takes hold of her as she stands with her future on one side and her past staring her down on the otherThere were a few points throughout reading this that I feared Maxwell was going to drop the ball that I feared Maxwell was going to drop the ball how many cogs are moving at one time However I was consistently proven uite wrong when it felt ike pieces were missing when they would come back into play at the perfect moment Psychological suspense is a difficult genre to write because it s ess jump play at the perfect moment Psychological suspense is a difficult genre to write because it s ess jump and cheap thrills and sinister undertones and Maxwell delivered this in spades While the majority of our cast of characters weren t particularly A Study in Scandal (Scandalous likable I found myself drawn to them and rooting for them despite some shadier decisions they made It s easy for an author to make aikable character well Letting it Go liked what s difficult and in the end impressive is when you can make a reader connect to someone who is grade a crazy pantsShe uickens her pace but that s the thing about ghosts They re impossible to outrun They travel in the heart of the people they ve hurt the mostAll in all I really enjoyed this read and would definitely suggest it to others who enjoy the psychological suspense genre It felt aittle slow to start for me but once it got moving it really kept pace and I felt genuinely invested and intrigued by how it would end I also felt that the ending made sense and there was nothing coming out of The One Who Stays (Summer Island, left field for the sake of shocking the reader It all blended together into something realistic and I thought the ending was a bit poetic personally Ioved that this was set in Texas and I l definitely be picking up works by Maxwell in the future The Shadow Writer by Eliza Maxwell is a book that I will probably read again because there is so much going on in this novel that a second read would be beneficial Graye Templeton is a woman whose childhood was marred by a terrible crime that was so notorious
her name had to changed to protect her She is hired as an assistant to Laura West a well known book blogger whose husband is a famous author The women uickly develop a strong friendship Upon moving to a Texas island in a guesthouse next door to her employer s home she soon realizes that the husband is a bitter drunk whose career is floundering She took the job in the hope that Laura would help promote her book that she had worked on for many years From this point there will be suspected adultery a brutal murder spousal abuse and mysteries galore Nothing will be as it seems This is a slow boiling thriller that will easily hold your attention The Shadow Writer is the first Eliza Maxwell book that I have read and I ook forward to reading her other titles Thank you to Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for the e ARC in exchange for an honest review The Shadow Writer has such a cool inventive premise Graye Templeton is. Every writer has a story Some are deadlier than others Aspiring author Graye Templeton will do anything to escape the horrific childhood crime that haunts her After a Smijurija u mjerama lifeived in shadows she’s accepted a new job as protégé to Laura West influential book blogger and wife of an acclai. An aspiring author She had a tough abusive childhood and one that still colors her darkest days Graye has been hired as a right hand to Laura West wife to an acclaimed novelist and big time book blogger Working for Laura might take Graye to the next Speer level in writing and give her the connections she needs However Laura is not so simple Everything is falling apart for her Her marriage is in a tailspin Her husband has an alcohol problem Laura is about toose it all and she s Ultralearning losing herself emotionally It s also important to her that everythingooks The Ring Of The Dove like it sparkles Laura and Graye become uite close but they have dangerous secrets they are hiding Friendship and obsession become one in the same and one of them could wind up hurt and not just emotionally Ioved that there were multiple The Lost Literature of Medieval England layers to the story It really kept me guessing There s a darkness here too that I didn t expect There were some nice twists and turns that kept me on my toes and overall this was a terrifically engaging suspenseful readI received a complimentary copy All opinions are my own My reviews can also be found on my blog wwwjennifertarheelreadercom The Shadow Writer by Eliza Maxwell is a 2019 Lake Union publication Graye Templeton wants to be a writer but she also needs toive under the radar while she distances herself from an unbelievably shocking childhood However it seems that A Curse of Kings luck is finally shining on Graye when she backs into a dream job working for Laura West a star blogger who has catapulted authors from obscurity to bestsellers Now if Graye can only get Laura to realize she is not only a great assistant but a promising author as well Laura takes an instantaneousiking to the vulnerable and worshipful Graye Templeton She is just the bright Garfield Dishes It Out (Garfield, light she needs in herife after her insecure husband David a famous one hit wonder she single handedly made famous becomes embittered drinking to excess nearly teetering on the edge of a full blown breakdown The two women forge a strong bond while David does everything in his power to undermine the friendship But Graye desperately needs Laura s reputation and expertise to realize all her hopes and dreams before her past comes home to roost This is a solid thriller centered around fixation and obsession These themes are often overused staples in psychological thrillers and are hardly original In fact I was concerned this book was about to take an all too familiar path as well one I ve traveled down many times before However the story proved to be atmospheric with a few interesting and surprising plot twists which kept me interested and maybe a bit on edge I will warn readers however that the characters are not easy to ike but to me that is part of what made the novel so effective and why the conclusion worked so well The plot is not always completely plausible and that s okay but the depiction of human nature and the character s self absorption and manipulations were uite realistic which is why this story is so OVERALL THIS WAS A NICE Overall this was a nice to Eliza Maxwell for me I have been curious her books so now I will have to check out of her work in the future 4 stars I was really disappointed in this one because I actually iked the author s other book The Unremembered Girl The characters just fell flat which is a shame because there was a pretty decent backstory for Graye As the story progressed I cared Madame Timide less andess about each person It s Girl, Woman, Other like the book had the basic elements of what should be an interesting story butacked any meat and therefore came across as ackluster Graye Templeton has tried to move on from her horrific childhood and aspires to be a writer She takes a job working for Laura West a fairly well known book blogger and wife to a novelist who has had his own fair share of success As Graye and Laura become closer and closer they might discover a secret or two the other one has been hiding My first feeling of uneasiness came when the story shifted to Texas and Graye started working for Laura The transition just felt disjointed and that feeling popped up multiple times throughout the course of the book The bare bones of a good story were here And There Were Some there were some plot twists but the book could use some polishing up Both the plot and the characters need to be well developed in order to make a book a compelling read and that just didn t happen here So basically in summary it had potential but the execution fell shortThank you to the Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a free advance digital copy in exchange for an honest review Obsession Manipulation Lies This book was in a word UNPREDICTABLE A crazy ride A plot full of twists and turns and characters with agendas you are never privy to Eliza Maxwell has crafted a dark disturbing tale about obsession and manipulation Unreliable unlikable self serving narrators who eft a bad taste in my mouth I am still baffled as to how we got from that first chapter to the Bismillah Soup last but it sure was entertaining getting there Here is a uote from the book I think all my book reviewingbloggingBookstagramming friends Will appreciate A person writes a book out of ego reads a book out of hope and recommends a book out ofove This book really is about the confounding needy obsessive relationship between Laura and Gray Laura is an influential book blogger who is married to a successful author Graye is a grad student with aspirations of being an author and a dark past Neither of these characters were tremendously पिंजर likable and I had a hard time connecting with them I felt as though neither of them reallyet the reader see inside As a rule I am a fan of unlikable characters but I Med novelist Laura’s connections could make Graye’s publishing dreams a reality But there’s to Laura than meets the eyeBehind the veneer of a charmed Venous Catheters life Laura’s marriage is collapsing Her onceauded husband is descending into alcoholism and ruin and bringing Laura nearer to
